(no subject)

I forgot to post the other week, what with having to take to my sick bed and all, that I have been asked to be a director of the Food Link. I have never been a director of anything before and I feel foolishly chuffed. It is a non-profitmaking organisation where lots of local small producers (like herb growers, market gardeners, the crab man, the oyster man, the mussel man, the scallop man, a cheesemaker, soap maker, fudge maker etc) have joined together to distribute their wares around Skye and Lochalsh; they have a van and employ a driver who collects all the produce and then delivers it, reducing food miles and allowing people like me to use really fresh local stuff. They are also involved in local initiatives like the Slow Food movement, and a local meat feasibility study and a scheme to get local fresh food on to the school dinner menus. I think it is a fantastic idea and had attended a couple of their open meetings, and now they have asked me to join their board and represent the consumer side of the equation.

Yesterday I did a Food Hygiene course, and had to look at horrid pictures of cockroaches and weevils. And I passed the exam with flying colours (it was an extremely easy exam but it is some years since I took one so I was slightly apprehensive).

Congratulations, madam director! It sounds a really interesting organisation. What's the Slow Food movement? I assume it's as opposed to Fast Food.

Also, congratulations on the directorship. Have you been sent a Helpful Leaflet from the company registration people yet?

I did when I got registered as a director of the Homosamurai - it's all about "your responsibilities as a director" and stuff.

Oooh. I shall be watching the post. The responsibility.

The UK Slow Food organisation are having their first national get together on Skye in August.

[identity profile] cangetmad.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Really? How does one join and come?

[identity profile] debodacious.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not entirely sure. One of the Food Link members went to the Slow Food conference in Italy last autumn and she is trying to start a Skye group, but I don't know very much about the August thing yet. I have asked her to keep me posted and will pass on any information I get in due course.

Shall muchly appreciate. The girlie is obsessed with making me go to Skye with her, and this might just work...

[identity profile] debodacious.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh but you should come to Skye anyway. It's lovely. And you could come and see me and I could worship the Gnome.

Yes. It started in Italy in opposition to MacDonalds and the like, and has grown.

Yay! I absolutely love orgs like that... there are a few here and I've been a subscriber to all of them at one time or another. And many congratulations on being named Director! Wheee!

[identity profile] debodacious.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I am ever so slightly concerned that my chuffedness at being a Director may mean I have secret capitalist leanings and would be horrid to the proletariat given half a chance.

Changing the subject completely is that a swing in your kitchen? Or have I misunderstood. If it is I cannot tell you how jealous I am.

[identity profile] jeejeen.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Commence jealousy! It is a swing, indeed. It swings supremely between kitchen and living room and is wonderful fun, although we're not sure how much longer it will last. We've already changed the rope twice. Wheeeeeee!

*swings*

You can sort of see it better here:

Open mouthed and speechless with jealousy. :-O

[identity profile] jeejeen.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I think, from now on, I'll try to incorporate a swing into every apartment. I guess you've got to have post and beam, though.

When my kids were tiny we had a baby swing that hung in the doorway but I never thought of a Groan Up version.

[identity profile] jeejeen.livejournal.com 2005-03-23 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, Groan Up!

I know, me neither, till we moved into this place. It's seriously so fun.

A fuck off face mask and a kitchen swing. You can be today's Official Coolest Dude.
